Black History Month – ways to celebrate, honor, remember around Richmond

February is Black History Month, and there are so many ways to celebrate the accomplishments of those who’ve contributed to the story of our nation, and particularly our region. To learn about and honor these incredible individuals, read about them and then visit the following places right here in Richmond.

Go visit the mural at 2803 Dupont Cir. Pack some tennis racquets for the chance to actually play right here, at Battery Park, where Ashe actually learned to play! (There’s a playground here, too!)
 

Tuskegee Airmen

 
Learn about the first African-American military aviators by reading Who were the Tuskegee Airmen? and then head over to Virginia War Memorial to see a replica of the P-51D Mustang aircraft that they once flew.
 

Barbara Johns

 
Take a walk through Capitol Square to see a statue of Barbara Johns, a brave teenager whose courage fought for equal education at the R.R. Moton School in Farmville. Travel to Farmville to learn even more at Moton Museum.
