The news: Maymont introduces Out-of-School Day Camps

 

When: September 2023 – April 2024, on select days when schools are out, from 9am-3pm

 

Who: K – 8th grade students in the Richmond area

 

Why: Summer Camps presented by Papa Johns were a big hit this summer, so Maymont is extending the concept into the academic year to give families a fun and educational alternative in a 100-acre classroom with experienced educators.

 

What: A day filled with scavenger hunts, animal encounters, nature and history walks, hands-on science experiments, and a chance to meet the professionals who care for Maymont’s plants, animals and historic artifacts.

 

Adventures don’t have to end when the school year starts. Maymont is introducing a new option for families seeking stimulating programs for their students on selected dates when school is out of session: Out-of-School Day Camps!

Students will enjoy a stimulating experience in Maymont’s 100-acre classroom, meeting native animals, exploring gardens, discovering the past and learning about nature. From 9 am to 3 pm, Maymont’s experienced educators will lead students through engaging activities such as scavenger hunts, animal encounters, nature and history walks, and interacting with animal keepers.

“Kids love exploring Maymont, from climbing the 34-foot River Reach sculpture in The Robins Nature Center to dipping nets into the bottom of the Dooley Branch creek,” said Krista Weatherford, Director of Programming and Community Engagement. “And history comes alive in the artifacts and stories that Maymont has collected about the people who lived and worked here.”

Each session will have two experienced adult educators with a 9:1 student/teacher ratio. Staff are trained in first aid and CPR. A limited number of spaces are available for each grade level (K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th and 6th-8th) and are expected to fill up quickly. Maymont members (at the Family level and above) save 25% off the $70 registration fee, and discounts are available for certain multi-day packages.
