The Theatre on the James, the student-led theatre company at James River High School, finishes its 2023/2024 season with Pulitzer Prize-winner Arthur Miller’s Tony Award-winning masterpiece The Crucible. This disturbingly timeless play will play for only three performances, at 7:00pm on April 25, 26, and 27, 2024.
In the forest surrounding a small, isolated town, a group of teenage girls are caught dancing around a fire in the middle of the night, and thus begins the unraveling of the tightly guarded community of Salem. The leader of the girls, Abigail Williams, suddenly finds powerful people in the community paying attention to her words, and mixed with this newfound sense of power is an unsure diffidence on how to use it. As the girls’ accusations spiral out of control, old grudges and antagonisms flare, until no one is safe from the noose.
“One of the incredible aspects of The Crucible is how easily it fits into almost any time period,” explains director Skye Whitcomb. “People can be led to do horrific things to each other, once they stop seeing other people as actual human beings. And at the same time, there are always those individuals who refuse to be taken in by the hysteria, who hold onto their humanity, and unfortunately they often end up victims.”
One of the pillars of American theatre, Arthur Miller also wrote the Tony Award- winning All My Sons and Death of a Salesman, which also won the Pulitzer Prize. The 2016 Broadway revival of The Crucible was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play.
The performances will be at the James River High School theatre, 3700 James River Road in Midlothian. Discounted tickets may be purchased in advance at www.theatreonthejames.com, or for full price at the door.
