VWM Livestreams – Images of the Great War

Stereoscopic images have been popular since the mid-nineteenth century. Photographers created amazing images and combined them with detailed descriptions that brought World War 1 (1914 – 1918) into homes and classrooms. Using these images, Virginia War Memorial Director of Education Jim Triesler will take you on a journey to the towns and battlefields of World War I where you will encounter the “Images of the Great War.”

VWM Livestreams – Old Stories, New Life: Technology’s Role in Sharing American Heroism

With rapid changes in American society and technology, the ways in which we tell stories is constantly evolving. By utilizing technological innovations, young historians are able to share the American spirit in creative ways that connect with Americans across the ages. Join Virginia Commonwealth University professor, Dr. Bernard Means, and VCU senior Maggie Colangelo as they share how Colangelo was able to tell the story of Virginia WWII Veteran Russell Scott through the creation of a comic book utilizing resources in VCU’s Virtual Curation Laboratory.

VWM Livestreams – Tragedy in Richmond: The Crash of Flight 201/8
Thursday, November 17 – 10:30 am EST
On November 8, 1961, Imperial Airlines flight 201/8 was transporting new recruits for the United States Army to Columbia, South Carolina for training. A drop in engine fuel pressure caused the need for an emergency landing at Byrd Field near Richmond, Virginia. At 21:24, the plane crashed into trees and engulfed in flames. Seventy-seven passengers and crew lost their lives. It was the second largest civilian airplane crash in American History to date. Virginia War Memorial Director, Dr. Clay Mountcastle, will explore this tragic event and the impact that it had on airplane safety.
