If you’re looking for an impactful way to serve kids in our community AND to involve your own kids in the process Worthdays is SUCH a great opportunity.
Worthdays is a nonprofit whose mission is to celebrate children in foster care, to make them know they are valued and WORTHY. Additionally, Worthdays works to fill unmet needs of vulnerable children, providing opportunities of joyful, normal childhood experiences. With contributions from the community, Worthdays provides:
- Birthday Boxes; gifts on other important days
- Summer camps, specialized lessons
- Luggage so kids don’t use trash bags to move belongings from place to place
- Necessities for older youth: transportation, employment, dorm room essentials
Get involved
A fun and valuable way to get your own family, organization, club, church, school group, etc. involved is through Birthday Boxes. Most children know the importance of celebrating birthdays, and will want to shop and put a Birthday Box together. To do a Birthday Box, follow Worthdays on social, as they post information and lists of children to celebrate, from Petersburg to Hanover, and sometimes all the way to NOVA.
Once you’ve signed up you will get clear instructions on drop off, the child’s interests, and Caroline (Worthdays Founder) is available to answer any questions. In Chesterfield, Bella Cuttery in Moseley is a drop-off site. In the Tri-Cities, Ace Hardware in Colonial Heights is a drop-off site, and there are more in the city, including Worthdays itself.
Other ways to help range from making a donation to volunteering to deliver birthday boxes.
Tips
Luggage, or bags are always appreciated so children do not have to use trash bags to carry their belongings as they travel to a new foster home. Personalized touches make a huge difference. For embroidered items, Southside Embroidery does outstanding personalized work. For stamps, Modern Maker Stamps creates stamps with names, designs and more, making the child’s day even more special.
