Since 1887, the YWCA of Richmond has been helping women in the Richmond community, helping thousands of women empower themselves and their children. Many programs are free of charge, enabling equal opportunities for women, children, and families of all ages, races and income levels. The YWCA of Richmond has been providing emergency shelter for women (and their dependent children) escaping violent homes for nearly forty years.
Today, the YWCA of Richmond’s services are as important as ever as the organization remains committed to:
- Giving victims of domestic and sexual violence rescue, recovery, and life-rebuilding programs
- Helping survivors of violence foster emotional, social, and economic stability
- Providing children quality opportunities for learning through our nationally-accredited Child Development Center

YWCA Richmond has immediate and urgent needs for sanitary items – hand sanitizer, lysol disinfecting spray, disinfecting wipes, face masks, personal protective outerwear – in order to keep their emergency shelter apartments open for clients fleeing domestic violence. YWCA Richmond fully expect to see demand for shelter space to increase during this public health crisis, and wants to protect front-line employees as well as the clients coming into shelter to the best of their ability. If you can donate any of these items to the YWCA, please contact Heather Garrett at hgarrett@ywcarichmond.org to arrange a time to drop the items off at the YWCA. You will not need to come in the building, nor come into contact with any staff. If you would like to donate cash instead, please visit the website: ywcarichmond.org.
The Greater Richmond Regional Hotline for domestic and sexual violence is open and working to get resources to survivors of abuse through tele-counseling, safety planning and de-escalation strategies. The number is 804.612.6126 and it is open 24/7. YWCA Richmond runs this hotline and works with 6 other organizations including Safe Harbor.
The YWCA Essential Personnel Childcare Center is open for full day preschool in order for their workforce to remain on the front lines of the pandemic. The childcare center is offering full and partial scholarships for families who need them.
